Surf Simply Podcast33 - South To Sian Film Review

Recorded on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 with Ru Hill, Harry Knight, Asher King and Will Forster.

INTRODUCTION:

WIll started us off by mentioning the articles he's been writing for the Surf Simply Magazine, and Ru spoke about being a pseudo-parent to his 2 nieces for the last few weeks.

Surf Simply technical surf coaching resort, Guiones, Nosara, Costa Rica

Asher mentioned the Surf Simply trip to Indonesia that he's putting together for September, and Harry spoke about the new boards he and Asher have ordered for the trip.

THE NEWS:

First up this week, Harry brought up the app that one of our former guests, Robert Nederhorst has developed to track surf sessions. The app is called Surf Track, and the first 10 people who email rob@surftrackapp.com and mention the Surf Simply Podcast, will get the pro upgrade for free.

Next up was the news that Owen Wright has pulled out of the WCT for the rest of the year, but that he's back surfing a shortboard again after suffering a huge head injury at Pipeline last year.

We moved on to talk about the interview that Owen's sister Tyler gave to ABC Grandstand in Australia,

We also mentioned this great edit of her surfing at Puerto Escondido in Mexico.

Moving on, Ru mentioned the Rip Curl Cup invitational contest that's taking place at Padang Padang in Bali, in talking about the contestants, we mentioned Chris Ward's jail sentence for domestic abuse.

Final piece of news this week was the story that the N-Land Wave Park in Austin, Texas have been having trouble with the local authorities. This lead Harry to mention the Dihydrogen Monoxide memes that have been going around the internet.

CONTEST ROUNDUP: J-Bay Open

Mick Fanning won the J-Bay Open, beating John John Florence in the Final.

The slightly lower quality surf made Ru bring up this edit from Griffin Colapinto, that was filmed in the week leading up to the start of the contest.

We also mentioned the US Open contest that was going on as we recorded this episode.

MAIN FEATURE: South to Sian film review

Our main feature this episode was a review of the new Deus ex Machina film, South to Sian.

The film is not fully released yet, but you can rent the movie from Garage Entertainment.

We mentioned in the review Deus' previous movie, I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, which I can post on here, but you can watch for free on Vimeo. We also mentioned the old Woodshed Films movie, Shelter

As a final round up, Harry gave South to Sian a 7/10, Ru gave a 9/10 and Asher and Will both gave it a 10/10.

LISTENER EMAILS:

First email this episode was from Ryan Schaul discussing the possible ramifications of wave pools becoming more common.

Garry Hoover recommend “A checklist manifesto” by Atul Gawende as a really good read for anyone who enjoyed Ru's piece on Algorithms to Surf By in Episode 32.

The last email was from Martin in the UK who was asking for techniques on how to start to do better bottom turns.

WHAT TO WATCH:

The best edit by far this episode was the first part of Hurley's new series 12, which follows John John Florence through the 2016 contest season.
