Surf Simply Podcast52 - In Bloom

Recorded on Monday 27th of November, 2017, with Harry Knight, Jessie Carnes, Will Forster and Ru Hill.

Apologies for the accidental upload of Episode 51 instead of Episode 52 for a few hours.

INTRODUCTION:

We started this episode by talking about our recent experience with a CNN film crew who were in Nosara last week. Harry mentioned this unfortunate incident with a Today Show reporter:

Ru also mentioned our weekly movies that you can check out on our YouTube Channel.

Will has a new Firewire Omni that he's been enjoying a lot, and he spoke about his Pyzel board that he's been trying to chase the history of.

Jessie is on the hunt for a new Longboard. She's been looking at the Bing Pocket Knife and the Black Rose Dark Horse. She also mentioned Dead Kooks Surfboards and our local surf shop Olo Alaia, while Ru pushed his Bing Levitator.

Ru told us all about the sad demise of his camera and water housing, and Harry and Ru spoke about our recent mention in the Financial Times. The article was really about Andrew Cotton and his new Big Wave teaching courses that he's running with Bay Fitness.

THE NEWS:
In the news this episode, the WSL have released the schedule for next years world tour.

Punto de Lobos in Chile has become a Surf Reserve, and the Surfer Poll Awards are now open for votes. We believe that Jessie may be voting for Sally Fitzgibbons!

MAIN FEATURE: Ru on The Blue Planet II

Ru has been really captivated by the new BBC series Blue Planet II

He spoke to us about how this series is a unique place in history where this may be the only time that the camera technology and wildlife abundance overlap.

We mentioned that Harry's sister, Emily is creating the accompanying podcast for the series, which is now at the top of the UK podcast charts.

We spoke about the musical collaboration between Thom Yorke and Hans Zimmer:

Ru also mentioned some of the interviews that David Attenborough has given in the run up to the series. You can hear his comments about the increase in plastic at the 28min mark on this video.

Harry mentioned a podcast conversation between David Attenborough and Dan Snow on the process of making educational documentaries, and Ru mentioned this episode of the Infinite Monkey Cage

MAIN FEATURE: Will on Surfer Shapers

Will recently read this article from Surfer Magazine about championship surfers who shape their own board.

He mentioned the Encyclopedia of Surfing site that Matt Warshaw runs.

He also made reference to Mason Ho's unique way of describing waves.

And mentioned Noa Dean and Jordy Smith as examples of surfers who have a close relationship with their boards.

And here is Rob Machado cruising around at the Maldives surf contest.

MAIN FEATURE: Jessie on Women’s World Tour

Jessie gave us her rundown on the final stop of the women's world tour in Maui, with help from some statistics provided by Francisco Pimentel, founder of Fantasy Surfing Tips.

Unfortunately, by the time Harry got around to editing the show, the contest was already over, but we had fun talking about the possibilities.
