Surf Simply has teamed up with Era Adventures, the UK’s leading lifeguard training center, to offer an international beach lifeguard course, every November, here in Nosara. The course is a legal requirement for anyone working as a beach lifeguard or a surf coach outside North America but more importantly for recreational surfers, the course serves to build confidence in the surf and give you an essential foundation in ocean safety. The course is open to surfers who are level 2 or above.
The 2014 course is already full however the 2015 course will run in the first week of November. Please let us know if you would like to be contacted when the dates are confirmed for November 2015. The course costs $2280 which includes the course’s tuition and ILSF/RLSS administration fees, all equipment, airport transfers, meals and 7 nights accommodation. The five day course is also a lot of fun and an incredibly rewarding challenge.
What will I learn on the course?
The course is a mixture of practical ocean training and theory based, classroom sessions. The water work involves rehearsing rescue scenarios which is fun but hard work, so make sure that you can swim 400m in 7.5 minutes in a pool first. This also happens to be the timed swim which you will be required to do during the course. The course also involves understanding the theory of beach management, as well as first aid and basic life support. Much of the course is applicable to medical situations away from the beach too, so you will finish the course knowing how to deal with the most common accidents and medical emergencies which can occur to anyone in every day life.
What certification will I get
The lifeguard award is held with the International Life Saving Federation (ILSF) and The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS). It is valid worldwide as a beach lifeguard certification and is required in order to validate any surf instructor awards held with the International Surfing Association (ISA). Much more importantly though this course will build your confidence as a surfer and should be done by everyone who wishes to make surfing a sport for life. Contact us to be added to the waiting list for Nov 2015.
